KYIV, UKRAINE - JANUARY 31: People wait near the Kharkivska metro station after large-scale outages caused by Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy system on January 31, 2026 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Temperatures in Kyiv were at 10 °C and are expected to drop to 24 °C later. Emergency power outages hit Kyiv and surrounding areas on Saturday, causing widespread electricity losses across the capital and halting metro services as voltage dropped below operational thresholds. The unexpected grid malfunction also disrupted water and heat supply in parts of the city, with authorities working to restore essential services. Kyiv's metro temporarily stopped train movement and escalator operations while stations operated on backup systems or remained dark. Officials said the outages stemmed from a technical failure on major transmission lines that triggered cascading protective shutdowns, affecting daily life amid cold winter conditions.
