It shouldn’t be a secret who the prime minister has dinner with, and what was discussed. Australians deserve to know | Geoffrey Watson

Any money being paid to dine with Anthony Albanese should be a matter of public record

Our prime minister was quite right when he recently pointed out that diminishing public trust in our politicians and political system is a matter of pressing public importance. We all know this to be true: there is a sense that politicians are inaccessible and remote from our everyday problems, whether it is cost of living or housing. The perception is that the politicians are not listening to us.

So I’m wondering, did Anthony Albanese raise these issues when dining at the multimillion-dollar home of a billionaire’s son? Or at either of the recent dinners, held in mansions in Adelaide and Perth, where a select group reportedly paid $10,000 each to dine alongside him?

The government continues to face an all-out effort, led by parts of the media, to depict Anthony Albanese as the Benny Hill of international diplomacy endangering Australia’s regional standing.

There is ongoing anger – or so we’re told – over a crude double entendre from the Australian prime minister made over a month ago that indirectly involved his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi and her gift of two melons during her recent Australian visit.

This is from Tom Baldwin, Keir Starmer’s biographer, and head of communications for Ed Miliband when he was Labour leader.

We seem to be in a strange place where Keir Starmer is being told he must quit to prevent more uncertainty and chaos (by those who have caused much of it) but then stay on for a couple of months because the guy who has been desperate to take his job is not yet ready to do so…

Eleven Australians attempting to deliver aid to Gaza as part of a global flotilla have been detained by Israeli forces in international waters off the coast of Cyprus, with the government “urgently seeking” confirmation of their welfare.

On Monday local time, the Global Sumud Flotilla alleged the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) encircled 38 ships that were part of a fleet of 54 boats which left Turkey last week for the embattled strip, which remains under naval blockade by Israel.

Australia’s obsequiousness to Trump’s America has gone way beyond the national interest

After mounting an illegal war with Israel against Iran without consulting traditional allies, Donald Trump, man-baby leader of the free world, is now throwing a grand tantrum because once reliable old friends won’t clean up his global mess.

Even by the standards of a US administration characterised by the constant redefinition of shark-jumping, the US-Israeli geopolitical madness of the past month – and the last week in particular – has stretched relations with historic partners, not least Australia, to snapping point.
