Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) blocked the effort, meaning the Trump administration will succeed in eliminating the funding it deemed “wasteful.”

The current farm bill expires at the end of September, but most of the funding for programs in the law will not run out until the end of the year.

The unusually large shift comes amid revelations that the president’s ballroom project will rely more on taxpayer money than the administration acknowledged.
