‘Super proud’ De Minaur takes down new world No 1 Zverev to reach Vienna Open final

  • World No 10 holds nerve in 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) semi-final win

  • Australian will meet Carlos Alcaraz in championship match

Alex de Minaur has held his nerve to claim what could be one of the most significant wins of his career, downing the world No 1-elect Alexander Zverev with a fearless display of attacking tennis to reach the Vienna Open final.

The Australian played a fabulous deciding tiebreaker, nervelessly brushing off a couple of double faults to keep the pressure on the two-time grand slam champion to prevail 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) to set up a championship match with Carlos Alcaraz at the Wiener Stadthalle.

Laver Cup back in the balance as Team World match their captain Andre Agassi’s energy

  • Alex de Minaur recovers from match point down to beat Alexander Zverev

  • Carlos Alcaraz launches comeback of his own to leave event level at 5-5

For much of his afternoon on court against Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur seemed destined to end his day with an excruciating defeat. De Minaur had rapidly found himself down a set and a break, then Zverev served for the match at 6-2, 5-4. After miraculously giving himself another lifeline, De Minaur finally faced a match point at 8-9 in the final set tie-break.

No matter how grim the scoreline appeared, though, every effort he made was punctuated by roars of approval from one person in particular. There were loud screams of encouragement, pounding of chairs and stamping of feet. At one point, as doubt had crept into Zverev’s game during the second set tie-break, that unmistakable voice from the sidelines yelled out: “Check his oil! Check his oil!”

Dimitrov ‘so happy’ to hold off Berrettini fightback in cathartic Wimbledon win

  • Bulgarian lauds ‘something special in the air’ after thriller

  • Zverev, Fritz and De Minaur all advance to fourth round

Twelve months ago, when Grigor Dimitrov tore his pectoral muscle as he was closing in on victory over Jannik Sinner, the Bulgarian was distraught. Not only had he been outplaying the now world No 1, but he had been playing some of the best tennis of his career. Clutching his chest on Centre Court, he didn’t know how long he would be out or even if he would ever get back to the same level. When Sinner won the title, well, you can guess his thoughts.

On Saturday, Dimitrov edged out a valiant Matteo Berrettini, who has been beset by injuries ever since he reached the final at Wimbledon in 2021, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3 to earn himself a place in the last 16 and a shot at redemption, and perhaps much more. He’ll meet Arthur Fery, the British wildcard who edged out Zizou Bergs in a deciding-set tie-break.

Australian Open 2026 quarter-finals: Alcaraz v De Minaur, Svitolina destroys Gauff – live

Live updates from the last eight at Melbourne Park
Sabalenka beats heat and Jovic | And you can mail Katy

Looking at the head-to-head, Svitolina has beaten Gauff before at the Australian Open, but that was in 2021, when Gauff was only 16 and hadn’t yet graduated to the status of double grand slam champion. Gauff has defeated Svitolina in the two matches they have played since, but they did both go to three sets. And I wouldn’t be surprised if this match goes the distance too. Svitolina is in supreme form, having won all nine of her matches in 2026.

Gauff and Svitolina have made their entrance, with the Rod Laver Arena roof closed. That’s always the case for the night session walk-outs, but we’re not sure yet if the the heat rule is in place which would mean the roof stays on for the match. It’s still 42C (!!!) at 7pm in the evening. Zverev placed his match under the roof earlier, the doubles matches are taking place under the roof on Margaret Court and the start of the wheelchair events have been postponed until tomorrow.

How Alex de Minaur can beat Carlos Alcaraz in Australian Open quarter-final

The home favourite has taken his speed and returns to new levels in Melbourne, but it’s his serve that will be key against world No 1

Alex de Minaur went into his quarter-final with Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open hopeful that he could make life difficult for the defending champion. Not only did that not happen, but the manner of his one-sided defeat left him wondering if he really had the game to trouble the top players.

Fast forward a year and the Australian again finds himself in the last eight, again facing one of the sport’s superstars, this time Carlos Alcaraz. As with Sinner, the head to head doesn’t make pretty reading for De Minaur, with Alcaraz leading 5-0. This, though, is their first grand slam meeting and there is a growing feeling that things can be different.

Australian Open 2026: De Minaur to face Alcaraz after Bublik win, Medvedev crashes out – live

Updates from the evening session at Melbourne Park
Alcaraz beats Paul | Follow us on Bluesky | Mail Katy

First set: De Minaur* 1-1 Bublik (*next server)

De Minaur is playing in the fourth round for the fifth consecutive year - a feat that not even Hewitt, Mark Philippoussis and Pat Rafter achieved at their home slam – but he’s never been past the quarter-finals. Which largely sums up his career: he’s so consistent in beating the players he’s expected to, but is underpowered against the very best. De Minaur does send a bullet of a backhand winner down the line to get to deuce on Bublik’s serve, though. But two errors then give the Kazakhstani the game.

Australian Open 2026: Zverev v Norrie, Tiafoe v De Minaur, Svitolina v Shnaider – live

Updates from the evening session at Melbourne Park
Mboko sets up Sabalenka clash after win | Mail Katy

Norrie and Zverev are going through the pre-match formalities. The umpire tells the players to smile big for the cameras. Not sure how easy that is for Norrie, given the British No 2, the last Brit standing in the singles, has lost to Zverev in all six of their previous meetings. The last time they played at the Australian Open was in 2024, when Norrie was denied 7-6 in the fifth set. But Norrie will at least take something from the fact he was able to push Zverev all the way then, and the fact that this is a night match, with slightly slower conditions, may help Norrie, because the rallies will be longer and more attritional and that’s what he loves.

Up next: we’ve got De Minaur v Tiafoe on Rod Laver and Norrie v Zverev on John Cain and Svitolina v Shnaider on Margaret Court.

Alex de Minaur v Mackenzie McDonald: Australian Open first round – live

De Minaur and MacDonald have met twice before with the Australian winning on both occasions, but the most recent of those was indoors in 2022, so it’s unlikely to be playing on the minds of either combatant.

This is De Minaur’s fourth match of 2026, following a United Cup campaign for Australia that saw him defeat Hubert Hurkacz and Jakub Mensik, and lose to Casper Ruud.
