Israel election results live: Qatar says accusations of election interference in Israel ‘ridiculous and dangerous’

Netanyahu’s claim of interference in election also dismissed by Israeli police and opposition parties

Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party and Benjamin Netanyahu’s main rival, has warned political opponents against exploiting allegations of foreign interference in Israel’s election to delay the swearing-in of the next Knesset.

In remarks posted on X, Eisenkot said:

Israel must safeguard the integrity of the elections against any attempt at interference, spin and manipulation, and examine every complaint thoroughly. On the other hand, political actors must not be allowed to exploit the situation and affect the swearing-in date of the 26th Knesset.”

Russell Brand was ‘ruthless and calculated’, prosecutors tell jury as rape and sexual assault trial begins – as it happened

Brand is in Southwark crown court today where his rape and sexual assault trial begins

Taking jurors through the third allegation, Karmy-Jones said Brand pulled another woman into a toilet during an incident at a bar in Soho in 2004.

The third complainant was “not so lucky as to be able to pull away”, the prosecutor said.

She continued to resist saying, ‘I’m not coming in there, don’t be silly. Are you mad? Get off,’ and she managed to pull herself away, and to release his grasp.

At that point he gave up and went into the toilet, and she left the area.”

Zelenskyy says ‘increasingly clear’ Russia does not want energy ceasefire after strikes on energy facilities – as it happened

Zelenskyy had proposed a 60-day total ceasefire to allow Ukraine to hold presidential elections

Addressing the conference virtually, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on Trump’s “sudden but very important” energy ceasefire declaration over the weekend.

He said it is clear that Putin “does not read Truth social”, the site that the US president posted his ceasefire declaration on.

Russia wants to ruin the existing security architecture in Europe to make sure that Russian domination comes back to where it was before 1989. We have no doubt about it.

This blog is now closed, you can read our full report on this story here

Netanyahu said one of the FlyDubai pilots stabbed his fellow pilot and intended to crash the plane.

He added that one of the passengers on the flight managed to break into the cockpit with one of the crew members, and together they “neutralised” the attacking pilot.

Almost all the passengers on the flight were Israelis. During the flight, as they were approaching Israel, one of the pilots stabbed the other pilot, and it appears he was attempting to crash the plane with everyone on board.”

RAF Fairford: Rubio says ‘foreign actor’ behind suspected plot as some evacuated residents begin to return home – as it happened

US secretary of state and Donald Trump express concerns about decision to bail suspects; some residents reported as hesitant to return home

Former national co-ordinator for UK counter-terrorism policing Nick Aldworth said investigators make bail decisions based on risk rather than investigative or geopolitical concerns.

His comments come as US president Donald Trump had earlier said he was “surprised” the five men had been freed on bail.

The provision of bail is set from a concrete foundation devoid of political or even investigative influence.

A custody officer will determine if those in custody will present any of a number of statutory risks and if they do not, then bail is usually granted if there is a need to conduct further investigation.

I have every confidence that if the police have released these individuals on bail, that they do not pose any ongoing risks to the public at large. The rest will undoubtedly come out in the ongoing investigation.

Speaking at the Labour party conference in Liverpool, the defence secretary, Wes Streeting, said he could not give further details about the RAF Fairford incident because there is a live police investigation.

MPs debate assisted dying bill ahead of parliamentary vote – UK politics live

Bill would allow terminally ill adults with less than six months to live to end their lives, after the approval of a panel of experts

While the debate continues, we have a comment from Sam Royston, executive director of research and policy at Marie Curie. He said the government must address the crisis in palliative care regardless of what happens with assisted dying, calling for a new framework and funding to ensure everyone has access to compassionate end-of-life care.

He said:

Whatever happens with assisted dying, the UK government must fix the crisis in palliative care.

It is devastating that nearly one in three people die without the help they need. Too many spend their final days in pain or on busy, chaotic hospital wards, while families are left fighting for help instead of spending time with the people they love.

I think it’s absolutely right that, for instance, the prime minister and the government have said that improving palliative care must be a priority for him and his government. I think that’s something that we can all support.

I think everybody should have access to good quality palliative and hospice end-of-life care at their final moment.”

Iranian state media has shared video from the site of the reported attack in Sirik, southern Iran, where officials say US strikes hit a wedding ceremony in a residential area, killing four people including two children aged four and 16.

Footage reportedly filmed inside the building where the wedding took place shows a debris-strewn floor, with women’s and girls’ embellished sandals and garlands scattered among the wreckage. A separate video shows the heavily damaged building from the outside, with a large hole visible in the roof. Here is an image from the footage released by the Iranian Red Crescent:

Coinciding with this week’s G20 meeting, the EU has issued a statement saying it will work with the US and other allied countries to maintain economic pressure against Iran.

“The ‌EU welcomes efforts at ensuring that Iran ceases its destabilising activities and engages in peace negotiations with good ‌faith, also through additional economic pressure, including through the US-led Operation Economic Outcast,” it said in reference to the pressure strategy the White House describes as “an unprecedented campaign to sever every remaining economic lifeline sustaining” the Islamic republic.

Burnham to announce cabinet picks on Monday – as it happened

This blog is now closed, you can read more on this story here

When Andy Burnham first tried to return to the Commons, by applying to be Labour’s candidate in the Gorton and Denton byelection, Labour’s national executive committee blocked him – in part because, they argued, Labour might find it hard to hold the Greater Manchester mayoralty in the byelection caused by his resignation.

When he next applied to be a candidate, for Makerfield, the NEC no longer felt able to say no because the results for Labour in the May elections were so bad that the case for having Burnham in parliament became overwhelming.

Iran accuses US of ‘barbaric’ strike near hospital as Kuwait says it is under attack – Middle East crisis live

Foreign ministry spokesman says children’s cancer hospital had to be evacuated in Ahvaz; Kuwait says it responding to renewed Iranian drone attacks

The Lebanese foreign minister, Youssef Raggi, said Lebanon has made a decision to “end Hezbollah’s military presence” and that decisions on war and foreign policy are the “exclusive prerogative of the Lebanese state”.

The Lebanese government is pushing to disarm Hezbollah, one of the most heavily armed militias in the Middle East, and it has become a central component of the US-brokered talks between Lebanon and Israel.

Lebanon has made its choice: there will be no return to dual authority, and there is no longer any place for weapons outside the authority of the state or for decisions taken outside its constitutional institutions.

The decision to end Hezbollah’s military presence is a sovereign Lebanese decision. It preceded the Framework Agreement and paved the way for it, affirming that decisions on war and peace, as well as foreign policy, are now the exclusive prerogative of the Lebanese state.”

Farage launches preemptive attack on Commons standards committee, claiming it won’t judge him fairly – UK politics live

Reform UK leader also tells the Daily Mail he did not anticipate main parties would not stand candidates in Clacton byelection

Andy Burnham has posted a video on social media confirming that he has nominated himself for Labour leader. Nominations opened this morning. Labour will publish daily updates on how many nominations he has received (it’s an open process, and so names of MPs nominating a candidate are published), and Burnham says we should get the first update at about 7pm tonight.

Al Carns, the former defence minister, has not been in to nominate himself. Last night he confirmed what everyone else already knew – that he would not be standing as a candidate. He said:

I’d hoped a leadership contest would give us the opportunity for a proper debate. But months of internal Labour politics isn’t what the country needs right now. We’ve got to get on with the job.

@AndyBurnham’s earned this and he’s got my full backing.
