Kimi Antonelli has suffered a run of no little bad luck of late, but the Italian teenager demonstrated it had left him entirely unfazed as he produced a dominant lap to secure pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix.

The 19-year-old’s composure and control at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday was something to behold as he flew round the circuit in the Ardennes mountains with ease, comfortably beating the Red Bull of Max Verstappen into second place. Notable was the manner in which he did so given Verstappen had benefited from having a tow from his teammate, Isack Hadjar, who willingly sacrificed his laps given he had a 30-place grid penalty to come.

The record-breaking crowd at Silverstone may have been unhappy in being denied a grandstand finale, as the British Grand Prix ended in the anticlimax of a flag waved to declare Charles Leclerc the winner under a safety car to a chorus of booing. But worse still, the unedifying finale was not helped by confusion reigning as an expected final-lap showdown turned out to be but the ghost of an FIA software glitch.

Yet, after all of which resulted in a damp squib close to what had been an intriguing race, the result has invigorated the Formula One world championship.

Much as Kimi Antonelli said he admired the British Grand Prix, its challenge and sporting spectacle, the Italian was in absolutely no mood to give a British driver so much as a sniff of a chance of enjoying a day in the sun as he swept to a majestic pole position for Sunday’s race.

Were will alone enough, the huge crowd at the old airfield would surely have powered Lewis Hamilton into the top spot, but their vocal support was not enough. Antonelli took his first pole here with the type of precision driving and commitment required on the high-speed blast that rewards drivers who can find the very edge. He did so with an authority and almost unconscious ease that unsurprisingly left his rivals a little deflated.

In the buildup to Sunday’s race Hamilton is as of old at the circuit that is all but his fiefdom. He has nine wins here since his debut in 2007 – a record for any driver at one circuit – which began a love affair for the meeting that he shares with the fans and has never diminished.

Lewis Hamilton said Ferrari’s underwhelming performance at the Austrian Grand Prix represented a reality check for him and the team after the euphoria of his first win with the Scuderia at the last round in Spain.

Hamilton finished in fifth at the Red Bull Ring, after a race where Mercedes’s George Russell took victory from pole position ahead an enormously quick Max Verstappen, whose Red Bull had made great strides with upgrades the team brought to Austria. Hamilton had moved to second in the championship after the last round and was looking so competitive that he was being touted as a potential title contender, but he has dropped back to third, behind Russell and his teammate Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader.

The moment of triumph hung briefly in the balance for George Russell in claiming pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix, but with the British driver bullish and ebullient after what was a mighty lap under dramatic circumstances, for him at least, there was never any doubt.

At the very sharp end of the final moments of qualifying, Russell was hurtling round the track after Max Verstappen when the Dutchman was too hot into turn nine, lost the rear and scythed across the gravel into the wall. In front of them, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had finished their laps as the single yellow flags were immediately waved.

Beneath the sweltering sunshine that bathes the Styrian mountains surrounding the Red Bull Ring there is at least a breeze of anticipatory air for the Austrian Grand Prix. After the opening to a Formula One season defined by Mercedes dominance, that Ferrari may now be applying their own heat is welcome, more so given it is Lewis Hamilton firing it up.

Hamilton’s victory at the last round in Barcelona, his first for Ferrari and the Scuderia’s first since 2024, was greeted by driver and team with understandable exultation; the seven-time champion has gone from his worst season last year to a potential championship contender.
