At the end of a ‘crazy, crazy day’, Elche were safe. But opponents, Girona, were down with Mallorca and Oviedo
Eder Sarabia wasn’t out there to see the tightest, tensest battle there has ever been end with liberation at last, but his mum and dad were and he wasn’t far away. Suspended for the final night of a season like no other, Elche’s coach was hidden down in the dressing room instead, watching the game that he knew was “us or them” on a TV set perched precariously upon a metal crate. There, as staff ran in and out delivering messages until it was his turn to set off on a sprint, he saw the match that defined five teams’ fate finish 1-1. Mobile in hand, alerts beeping, most of all he saw suffering. “Terrible, terrible, terrible,” he called it later, but by then at least it was done. Elche were safe. Their opponents, Girona, were down. Real Mallorca, like Real Oviedo, were going with them.
“Crazy, crazy day, crazy match, a lot of emotions: this league was really crazy,” Sarabia said. He had spent much of it surrounded by clothes on hooks and flags taped to walls; like everyone else, he had also spent it, he said, “on the edge of the precipice”. From the visitors’ dressing room at Montilivi, he had seen Álvaro Rodríguez score the kind of goal that wins cups in cartoons, tearfully dedicating it to his late dad, and Arnau Martínez equalise. He had seen cameras zoom in on his parents in the stands and wondered how Manu, a former footballer who doesn’t so much watch games as broadcast them, looked so calm when they were a goal from losing it all. He had seen Thomas Lemar hit Elche’s bar, “+7” appear on the screen, and his goalkeeper catch a cross on 95.55, Matías Dituro triumphantly holding the ball like Rafiki on Pride Rock, but it still wasn’t over.

‘A giant of Spain and Europe’, the Seville side haven’t been this low this late since 1999-2000. That year, they went down. It’s very possible again
“Sometimes football is a real bastard,” Luis García said. Seven days earlier Sevilla’s coach had warned that every game was going to be “total suffering, a heart attack”, appealing for his players to have personality even as he admitted that he too had “crapped myself alive” when the opposition attacked, fear invading every thought, terrified that the hope might have been taken from them. A week later, it was, in a way that was as unthinkable as it was somehow inevitable, with a goal that left Sevilla in their darkest place for a quarter of a century. A goal that came from a throw in the 99th minute. Or the 300,000th minute, García claimed.
Nine minutes had been added at Osasuna’s El Sadar Stadium, 19 seconds of which were left and, having led 1-0 until the 80th minute, Sevilla were now clinging to a draw. A point wasn’t much but was something when Osasuna took it. García’s exhausted players didn’t react and over by the bench the manager spun on his heel and threw his hands in the air, anger and anxiety rising inside. By the time García turned back, Osasuna’s Moi Gómez had crossed, unimpeded, and on 98.46 Alejandro Catena headed the winner. Osasuna’s coach, Alessio Lisci, went leaping up the line, with safety secured and Europe a genuine possibility; Sevilla’s crossed it, García marching on to the pitch, every step a stomp, ready to grab someone, anyone.

Visitors score twice in last 12 minutes to draw 3-3 in Rome
Sevilla come from 2-0 down to draw derby at Real Betis
Juventus maintained their hopes of reaching next season’s Champions League after bouncing back from two goals down to draw 3-3 at their top-four rivals Roma with nearly the last kick of the game. Federico Gatti lashed in Juve’s leveller in the third minute of stoppage time to give the visitors a point in Rome that keeps them four points behind their opponents in fourth.
Juve were trailing 3-1 with 12 minutes remaining after goals from Wesley França, Evan Ndicka and Donyell Malen gave the hosts a commanding lead in front of more than 65,000 delighted fans. But Jérémie Boga volleyed Juventus back into the game and just as Roma looked as if they would hold out for the win Gatti pounced on a poorly defended free-kick to snatch an unlikely point.

Mbappé makes it 59 goals in a year in win over Sevilla
Juventus stay in Serie A race with 2-1 win over Roma
Kylian Mbappé equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 59 goals in a calendar year for Real Madrid with a late penalty in his side’s 2-0 home win over Sevilla in La Liga on Saturday, the French forward celebrating his 27th birthday in style.
Mbappé missed several earlier chances before getting his chance from the spot four minutes from time and he made no mistake to net his 59th goal in as many games across all competitions in 2025 to level Ronaldo’s 2013 haul.

Manuel Pellegrini’s team had key players missing but still enjoyed a first triumph at the Sánchez-Pizjuán since 2018
“What can I say?” Pablo Fornals said, “really nice”. Mostly, in truth, it hadn’t been, but it was in the moment when he had illuminated everything, taking Batista Mendy, César Azpilicueta and Kike Salas out for a walk – first this way, then that – and it was now, the 144th Seville derby finally ending 20 minutes behind schedule and with a Real Betis win.
“You dream of playing games like this, just playing them,” Fornals said as high in the south-east corner of the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, 600 supporters in green sang, adding: “so to score and win, well, me, my teammates, all those lunatics up there and back home, you can imagine how happy we are”.
