Serie A had its second scoreless draw of the season on Wednesday evening. Parma and Udinese were the culprits, though perhaps they can be allowed some grace. The game was not short on incident, Maduka Okoye saving a penalty for the Friulians, who had been on a six-game losing streak, midway through the second half. Mariano Troilo made a goalline clearance for Parma soon after.

An open, end-to-end game was made to look drab in the context of this bonkers campaign. While Parma and Udinese stymied one another at the Tardini, Milan came from behind to lead Bologna at San Siro. And then collapsing to a 4-2 defeat.

Last year, not long before taking charge of the Italian national team, Gattuso got into a finger‑jabbing, language‑swapping, almost‑nose‑to‑nose shouting match with Josko Jelicic on Croatian television.

After a spring of boardroom civil war, the Giallorossi’s two-goal hero put his side close to a historic return to Champions League

A Rome derby on the penultimate weekend of the Serie A season could never be a low-stakes occasion. Scudetto wins come rarely in Italy’s capital city – Roma and Lazio have five between them – leaving neighbourly bragging rights as the next-most important prize on offer. It is an intense, bitter rivalry that has produced countless memorable moments – Francesco Totti taking selfies under the Curva and a cup-winning goal by Senad Lulic, for example – if also, sadly, many violent clashes between supporters.

It matters even more when either side has tangible objectives to play for, but as recently as late April that did not appear very likely. Roma were sixth – five points adrift of the Champions League places – and Lazio ninth. But then the Giallorossi got on a roll, just as Milan and Juventus started dropping points. A win in the derby could propel them into the top four, if either of those sides slipped up again.

This time Cristian Chivu allowed himself to occupy the stage for a moment, to acknowledge his part in Inter’s success. When the Nerazzurri sealed their 21st league title at the start of this month, their head coach did his best to get out of the limelight, thanking supporters then retiring to the changing rooms for a cigarette. At his scheduled post-game press conference, he appeared only long enough to introduce his coaching staff and say it was their turn to take the applause.

A selfless gesture, if perhaps also a reflection of the fact that he did not feel ready to celebrate. In a brief interview for TV, Chivu expressed happiness for his players then added: “I don’t want to be a hypocrite, but I’m thinking about the Coppa Italia final.”

Harry Kane missed a penalty as Bayern Munich failed to hit top form but the Bundesliga champions still edged struggling Wolfsburg 1-0 to bounce back after their midweek Champions League semi-final exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern, who won with a Michael Olise goal, had suffered a 6-5 aggregate loss to PSG after their 1-1 draw in Munich on Wednesday, narrowly missing out on what would have been their first Champions League final in six years. The frustration was evident at the start as the Bavarian side, with six changes in the lineup, lacked their usual attacking spark despite having Kane, the top scorer, in the starting XI.

Both deals have been driven by Nuno Espírito Santo, who is looking to help his struggling side’s fight to stay in the Premier League by adding more firepower. Raphinha struck twice late in the second half as Barcelona secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over a resolute Osasuna side, extending their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points. Hansi Flick’s men now sit on 43 points, comfortably clear of second-placed Real Madrid, who have a game in hand and play at Alavés on Sunday.

Despite their control of the game, Barcelona struggled to break down Osasuna’s deep defensive block until the 70th minute when Pedri’s incisive pass cut through the visitors’ defence, finding Raphinha in his stride. The Brazilian forward took a controlled touch before unleashing a thunderous strike from the edge of the area, the ball arrowing inside the left post to finally break the deadlock. Raphinha sealed the win in the 86th minute. A deflected cross from Jules Koundé on the right found the Brazilian unmarked at the far post, and he calmly volleyed the ball into an empty net, giving the scoreline a more comfortable look.
