Young people want to know more about the world of work. A survey of 2,000 13- to 18-year-olds for BBC Radio 5 Live found that they wanted to learn about applying for jobs (42%), managing stress (39%) and developing their communication skills (38%).

It’s sensible stuff – dispiritingly so. Shouldn’t they be drinking BuzzBallz at bus stops? If someone had asked 13-year-old me what I wanted to know about work, I would have stared blankly, or asked: “What job will let me touch Mark Shaw (of obscure 80s band Then Jerico)?” Look at what their French peers are up to!

It’s high time we rediscovered these delicious nuts, but be warned: like the Victorians, squirrels can’t get enough of them

When I think of the crops I’m eager to grow, my mind rarely goes to nuts. But when I spotted the last of the season’s cobnuts at the greengrocer’s, it occurred to me that this could be one to consider. The nuts that come from the hazel – a tree that grows in many a woodland and also my front garden – have been foraged for millennia and cultivated versions have existed since Roman times.

It’s the cultivated varieties you want to plant for a decent crop of cobnuts, as wild hazel produces smaller yields. This is a tree that prefers mild conditions, hence their connection to Kent, where they were grown abundantly during the Victorian era (one of the most popular varieties is called the Kentish cob.) They prefer a sunny spot, in free-draining earth – a challenge for me with my clay soil – in a sheltered position where they’ll be protected from frosts that would affect pollination.

The White House Farm massacre - exclusive: new forensic evidence suggests Sheila Caffell killed herself. Is Jeremy Bamber innocent?

23. Oktober 2026 um 05:00

In 1985, Bamber was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing five members of his family. Now analysis of crime scene photographs by a leading forensic biologist could exonerate him.

Warning: this article contains graphic photographs

On 7 August 1985, five people were found dead at White House Farm in Essex, England: 28-year-old Sheila Caffell (familiarly known as Bambi); her six-year-old twin sons Daniel and Nicholas; and her adoptive parents, June and Nevill Bamber. All five had been shot with a rifle. Caffell’s 24-year-old brother, Jeremy Bamber, who was also adopted, had alerted Essex police to a disturbance inside the farmhouse – he said his father had called to tell him – and was outside with the police for four hours before the bodies were discovered. Caffell, who had recently been hospitalised with schizoaffective disorder and is said to have feared her children were going to be taken into foster care, was found with the rifle lying on her chest, pointing towards her neck. There were two gunshot wounds to her neck and chin, and a bloodied Bible by her side.

Acquittal Fuels Doubts over Transfer of Bosnian War Crimes Cases to Serbia

While a court in Bosnia and Herzegovina has sentenced 13 people to a combined total of more than 180 years in prison for the killing of Bosniak civilians in two villages during the 1992-95 war, the acquittal of two others by a court in Belgrade has raised further doubts about the merit of transferring war crimes cases from Sarajevo to Belgrade.
