eTwo years ago, RM of the wildly popular K-pop boyband BTS was serving as a soldier in the South Korean military when he received an offer from América Castillo, a museum curator in San Francisco: would he consider an exhibition of his private art collection?

“I loved it,” said RM (real name: Kim Namjoon) at the media preview of RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me, a new exhibition that opened in San Francisco earlier this month and is co-curated by SFMOMA’s Castillo and Hyoeun Kim. “There aren’t many things that show a person more honestly than a collection they’ve built over a long period of time.”

Burning Man, the infamous arts festival in the Nevada desert, turned 40 this year, and it’s showing some distinct signs of middle age.

It’s not just the tech billionaires who show up to party, the chartered flights straight to the desert or the HBO documentary about behind-the-scenes power struggles. The tens of thousands of people who assemble each year to create a tent city in the wilderness appear to be growing older, and it doesn’t seem that they’re being replaced by as many younger “burners”, as festival participants are called.

Compton’s Cafeteria is one of the earliest examples of LGBTQ+ resistance. Today, a prison company occupies the site

One of the earliest documented examples of LGBTQ+ resistance against police happened on a hot summer night 60 years ago this month. It started not with the throwing of a brick, as it did in New York City’s 1969 Stonewall riots, but with the throwing of a coffee cup inside Compton’s Cafeteria in San Francisco.

When police attempted to raid Compton’s – a hub for the drag performers, trans people and sex workers in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood – hundreds of people in the community fought back. A drag queen threw a coffee mug at a police officer; others threw dishes and chairs outside. It was the culmination of years of police harassment, arrests and violence against the community and the beginning of the city’s trans movement.
