In the world being ushered in by Trump, power will prevail over cooperation. We will come to rue having taken this path

The Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, inspired a wave of enthusiastic nodding among the cosmopolitan crowd gathered in Davos last month when he took to the podium and proclaimed that the world order underwritten by the United States, which prevailed in the west throughout the postwar era, was over.

The organizing principle that emerged from the ashes of the second world war, that interdependence would promote world peace by knitting nations’ interests together in a drive for common security and prosperity, no longer works. The US blew it up.

Rolling coverage of the final day of the World Economic Forum in Davos

The weakening world order has been a key issue at WEF’s annual meeting this week, but could space be an area where the big powers, and the rest, can still co-operate?

Max Haot, CEO of Vast Space, is here in Davos, and is optimistic that heightened geopolitical tensions will not undermine the space industry.

Even during the Cold War, we did things with Russia at the time. We connected the Soyuz capsule of Russia with the Apollo capsule, and later on, we worked with Mir and the space shuttle.

We also hope, obviously, the collaboration starts on every level. Everything tells us historically, that there is a really good chance that the symbolism of human spaceflight, the desire to work together, the higher goal, can survive some more short-term tensions in other areas.

The US president unveiled the board with a gold logo whose resemblance to the UN emblem sparked European criticism

Donald Trump’s newly launched “board of peace” already has a logo – and perceptive eyes have noted its close resemblance to the United Nations emblem, except reworked in Trump fashion: all in gold, and focused squarely on the US.

Launched this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the initiative was first endorsed back in November by the UN security council, on the understanding that it would focus on brokering a ceasefire in Gaza. Since then, however, Trump has positioned it as a global body tasked with resolving international conflicts of all stripes, and to be chaired by Trump himself, in what appears to be part of the administration’s latest effort to reshape the postwar global order.
