Two people killed and at least 17 injured as Russia and Ukraine continue to trade strikes on power infrastructure

Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday thanked the Trump administration for resuming intelligence sharing between the two countries, but maintained the US had intentionally throttled its Starlink satellite internet access so that Donald Trump could send a “message” in his ongoing feud with the Ukrainian president.

In an interview on NBC, Zelenskyy said the US had “unblocked” intelligence on impending Russian ballistic missile strikes, which have pounded the country’s energy infrastructure as winter draws in.

The Trump administration pressured multiple countries to withdraw their sponsorship of a leading European conference on disinformation, with Canada, Lithuania and the EU’s diplomatic service subsequently agreeing to do so, the Guardian understands.

The conference, #Disinfo2026, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, is the annual meetup of Europe’s counter-disinformation community and has drawn hundreds of researchers, journalists, technologists and policymakers to a hotel in Vilnius, Lithuania. European intelligence officials have raised the possibility of an imminent Russian test of Nato, with one saying a potential attack could come in a matter of “months, not years”.

The warnings come after Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, told parliament that intelligence assessments suggested Russia might launch an attack with drones or missiles on Nato territory in the coming months, as part of efforts to prove that “article 5 is more theoretical than practical”.

Ursula von der Leyen says incidents ‘part of broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe’

A Russian warship fired two emergency flares at a Danish helicopter in the Baltic Sea and an Italian Nato fighter jet shot down a drone carrying an explosive device over Lithuania in what the EU described as “reckless and dangerous” Russian behaviour.

Poland also scrambled fighter jets “due to the activity of Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles conducting strikes on Ukrainian territory”, the day after Polish security forces retrieved a suspected Russian drone adrift in its waters.

This portrait by Vytautas Katkus of a man contemplating his recent fatherhood and his own father is steeped in ennui and ends up drifting

At one point in this Nordic-Baltic homecoming film, Danielius (Darius Šilėnas) refuses an invite for beachfront karaoke, preferring to watch from behind a polythene partition. At another, a neighbour glimpses him exercising across the courtyard, through the window of the flat in an end-of-summer Lithuanian resort that Danielius is trying to sell. Having returned from Norway to settle up accounts, this prodigal son is often holding the world at arm’s length – and director Vytautas Katkus does his best to help him with this distanced technique in this quizzical and faintly existential drama.

Little tangible is disclosed. Danielius is a thirtysomething father who skipped the funeral of his own dad the year before. Preparing the flat to go on the market, he walks the dog of his neighbour, Vismante (Vismantė Ruzgaitė), hangs speculatively at beach gatherings and falls asleep in pine forests. Ice-cream is eaten at every available opportunity. He’s not alienated exactly, but somewhat out of step. As he looks for new anchorage, even the film seems to question whether Danielius has sufficient main character energy: it periodically drifts to follow another resident, Tomas (Rokas Siaurusaitis), who is caring for his grandmother over the way.

Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies said they uncovered group responsible for money laundering $3.35m but did not name individuals involved

The rise in Germany’s borrowing costs to a 15-year high reflects the increased security challenges facing the country following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the need to spend much more defence, the Finance Ministry said on Wednesday.

German 10- and 30-year ‌borrowing costs ‌hit a fresh 15-year high in Wednesday’s ‌session. Bond yields of other major Western economies including the US and Japan have also climbed to multi-decade highs this ‌week due to ballooning government debt and geopolitics, increasing borrowing costs for companies and households and complicating policy.

“I am grateful to the MPs for supporting Andrii Sybiha for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Yevhenii Khmara for the position of Minister of Defence of Ukraine.

The tasks for both ministers are absolutely clear: Ukraine needs more strength. And it will have it. Glory to Ukraine!”

Two countries on Nato’s eastern flank have warned that Russia is preparing a possible “provocation” in the Baltic states or Poland in an effort to test the cohesion of the western military alliance.

Western sources also fear there could be danger on the horizon because the Kremlin is coming under pressure from Ukraine’s campaign of long-range attacks on targets near Moscow and St Petersburg.

A drone alert blasted on my phone – we had to take shelter. This is the new reality on Nato’s eastern flank | Linas Kojala

10. Juni 2026 um 05:00

In Lithuania, and throughout the Baltic, we have lived for years with Russian hostility – but the tech now means that London, Berlin and Paris are just as vulnerable

A couple of weeks ago, I was walking through the streets of Vilnius, on my way to give a talk on geopolitics to a group of visiting Austrian business and academic leaders. It was a pleasant spring day: people were out and about, cafe tables were set outside – all the familiar tranquillity of a European capital that has grown used to talking about war in theory, but not to expecting it overhead.

Then an alarm blasted from my phone. Not a polite notification. Lithuania’s emergency alert system is designed to be impossible to ignore. The first message warned of a possible drone threat. The next was sharper: air danger – seek shelter.

Ursula von der Leyen visiting Lithuania amid drone incursions as diplomats are called over Russian requests for envoys to leave the Ukrainian capital

Back to Ukraine, the EU has summoned Russia’s top diplomat in Brussels over Russian warnings telling foreigners and diplomats to leave Kyiv amid planned new strikes on the Ukrainian capital.

EU’s foreign policy spokesperson Anitta Hipper said on X:

“[Russian] threat to foreign citizens & diplomats to leave Kyiv is an unacceptable escalation. @eu_eeas summoned the Chargé d’Affairs, calling to stop hitting civilians & [Russia] to engage in genuine peace talks starting with a full and unconditional ceasefire.

@EUDelegationUA stays in Kyiv.”

“[The threat] shows once more, actually, one thing that we already knew, that Russia is absolutely not interested in any peace and has a total disregard for all the efforts towards the peace.”

Russian threats against Baltics ‘unacceptable’ and danger to ‘our entire union’, EU’s von der Leyen says - as it happened

In Brussels, Rutte begins by stressing the importance of Nato ministers meeting in Sweden, the alliance’s “newest ally” who joined in 2024.

“This says a great deal about how fundamentally our security environment has changed, especially when it comes to Europe. It is more dangerous, it is more contested and it makes it all the more important that Nato allies work together to safeguard our freedom and security,” he says.
