Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes held clear-the-air talks this week. Fernandes was an unused substitute against Bournemouth after criticising Carrick’s tactics during the Champions League defeat by Como but it seems the situation has been resolved – for now. Dropping Fernandes did not do United any good against Bournemouth, who ran riot at Old Trafford, and the captain is expected to return to the starting lineup for the trip to Chelsea. If that happens, he owes Carrick a performance. Fernandes has been poor this season and it is time he did his talking on the pitch. Jacob Steinberg

Michael Carrick will arrive at Stamford Bridge on Saturday with the air of a dead man walking. Yet despite Manchester United being fifth-bottom of the Premier League and Chelsea fifth-top, the Blues have performed worse this season according to Opta’s expected points model.

Is there a glitch in the matrix? Has the fabled supercomputer clicked on a suspicious link? Even though the margin between their data is small, it feels unthinkable that Chelsea could be below United’s level.

By Opta Analyst

In reality, it was only three points. All Tottenham took from their 2-0 win at Chelsea last Saturday evening was a helpful boost in the Premier League standings. But it feels far more significant than that.

This is a fixture Tottenham almost never win. In their 34 previous visits to Chelsea in the Premier League, they had won only once. It was their first win to nil at Stamford Bridge in any competition since December 1986, nearly 40 years ago. Winning at Chelsea is huge. Plenty of Spurs fans have only ever seen this happen once before, in April 2018 under Mauricio Pochettino, when their team was a formidable force.

The three Bournemouth goalscorers cost a combined £85m, joining from Vasco da Gama, Middlesbrough, and Porto. The Cherries are smart at investing, far more so than Manchester United, who have wasted a lot of money by failing to look outside the box for players like Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson. United may not have the wealth they previously showed in the transfer market but Bournemouth are showing what can be done within a budget and, more importantly, will be able to make a profit on signings. United, however, only know losses as everyone’s price tag diminishes the moment they come through the Old Trafford door. Jason Wilcox and others can point to certain factors that are against them but there are quality signings to be made at the right price if you have the ability to find them. Will Unwin

The sun kept popping out from behind the clouds to take a look, and then going back in again, appalled. And the really bad news for Crystal Palace is that, for them, that was the good bit.

Newcastle were much improved after the break. Will Osula touched in a Jacob Murphy cross two minutes after half-time, Joe Willock had an effort ruled out for a marginal offside five minutes later, and Harvey Barnes completed a slick passing move six minutes after that. A smattering of boos from the home fans made clear what everybody already knew. Quarter of an hour of proper football had been enough to win the game, and that leaves Pierre Sage under significant pressure.

Leaving out his captain was doomed to fail but so are the club under the current leadership and the fans at Old Trafford know that all too well

Dropping your captain, who has held the team together for most of the past five years, is a bold move from a man whose job is on the line. It was very much a make-or-break decision from Michael Carrick to leave out Bruno Fernandes against Bournemouth. It did not work and Carrick knew the consequences if it failed and will probably pay the price for it, but he should not be alone.

Carrick said the decision to drop the Portuguese playmaker was purely based on football reasons but criticising his manager after the desperate defeat to Como cannot have helped. Clearly Carrick disagreed with his captain’s comments on the lack of pressing in the Champions League fixture. It was somewhat telling that Lisandro Martínez kept his place despite pointing out the director of football, Jason Wilcox, was a hindrance to the club the previous week.

Brighton’s impressive run was blown off course at Anfield where Liverpool performed with an appetite and urgency at both ends of the pitch that showed Andoni Iraola’s methods taking root. It was Liverpool, deserving winners on home soil for the first time in the Premier League this season, who looked upwardly mobile.

There was more evidence of the expensive trio of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola feeling at home and adapting to Iraola’s demands. Wirtz was instrumental in an opening goal officially credited to Brighton’s Pascal Gross and Isak scored for the sixth time in six Premier League appearances to shatter the visitors’ sequence of four successive league wins. The sight of Barcola sprinting back to help his defence and Ronald Araújo smashing into challenges, as Liverpool stubbornly defended their lead and their box in the second half, satisfied Iraola just as much as his side’s incisiveness before the break.

Bournemouth humiliated Manchester United to leave Michael Carrick on the brink, while Liverpool beat Brighton, Newcastle won at Palace and Hull drew with Brentford

Otherwise, Carrick goes for ballast in the midfield, with Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba, which makes sense, but in front of him, there’s a palpable lack of magic. Matheus Cunha, hooked at half-time in Como, drops out, with Amad one of the least dreadful when he came on, coming in on the right. His numbers tell us he’s not the standard required, but he offers good out-of-possession work and gives the team balance, such as it is, the only dribbles in a team severely lacking one v one ability.

Otherwise, Mason Mount, every manager’s favourite, is relocated to the left, while Bryan Mbeumo continues up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko – which tells us plenty about what Carrick thinks of Joshua Zirkzee, despite his goal in midweek.

There are days when Tottenham go into these big games and find ways to beat themselves. This time, though, they held their nerve at a ground where they have mostly only known doom. Spurs played with control, stayed patient and won at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 2018 after waiting for Chelsea to press the self-destruct button during a calamitous and comical ending to a cagey game.

Chelsea were meant to have grown. Xabi Alonso had even praised his side’s emotional control and ability to manage awkward spells during the buildup, but perhaps that was asking for trouble. Chelsea, short of poise on and off the pitch, deserved to be beaten at home for the first time this season and there was plenty of blame to go around after Alonso got his tactics wrong, Mike Penders scored a ridiculous own goal and Cole Palmer was sent off after a lunge on Conor Gallagher when he was already on a booking.

Mistakes cost City as Marc Guéhi and Gianluigi Donnarumma were punished by Jackson, who will have taken great pleasure in ending the winning run of his former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
