How to bear witness when you can’t physically go there? Journalists have always grappled with this. Whether it’s because of armed conflict, repressive regimes or prohibitive terrain, some places remain too dangerous or difficult for reporters to access.

Enter low-orbit satellites. As the technology has evolved and proliferated, satellite imagery has become increasingly indispensable. But as with all reporting tools, it requires professional judgment and painstaking work to verify things.

The Nobel peace prize is not a contest determined by fame. Yet the betting markets consistently gravitate towards the biggest names in global politics – among them this year, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

That misses what the prize is for. The real work of building peace is often done far from the headlines: by courts that uphold international law, journalists who document atrocities, and humanitarian organisations that protect communities. With the 2026 prize due to be announced on 9 October, the Nobel committee has an opportunity to remind the world that peace is built through institutions and cooperation, not just diplomatic grandstanding.

Donald Trump stood before the United Nations on Tuesday and threatened to “annihilate” Iran. Yet even as the most powerful man on the planet flexed his military muscles, he was powerless to keep the gravitational pull of domestic politics at bay.

Heading into the UN building in New York, the US president was questioned by Kaitlan Collins, an anchor at CNN, which he had banned from the White House before a judge ruled against him. “I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me,” the 80-year-old snapped. “You should not be here covering me.”

The lack of justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta casts a shadow on reporters everywhere

The acquittal of Yorgen Fenech, who was on trial in Malta for involvement in the murder of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, is a devastating blow for justice and press freedom. Nine years after her car was blown up, it seems increasingly unlikely that anyone will be held to account for ordering and paying for her death. Mr Fenech’s admissions that he knew about the murder before it happened, and gave money to the middle-man who paid the killers, make it hard to understand why he was found not guilty on the lesser charge of association.

All killings of journalists are wrong. The bomb placed in Caruana Galizia’s car was especially shocking, as such brazen violence is usually associated with war zones or states overrun by organised crime. The fact that this acquittal came two months after those of three men accused of murdering another journalist, Lyra McKee, in Northern Ireland, adds to a grim impression of impunity for killers. While McKee is not thought to have been targeted in the way that Caruana Galizia was, the inability of police and prosecutors to secure convictions in either case points to wider problems.
