Court of appeal is set to rule on the two appeals from 10am in the high profile Australian mushroom triple-murder case

In August, the court heard Erin Patterson should have been given no possibility of ever being released from prison, or a non-parole period so lengthy that she was likely to die behind bars.

Her lawyers argued seven grounds for her appeal, including that allowing jurors to stay in the same hotel as police and the prosecution while they deliberated over their verdicts in the triple murder trial represented a “catastrophic” failure of the justice system.

‘It’s very clear that this was a deliberate act’, PM says

The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said Haines’ alleged attacker “did a U-turn in order to get back to where Helen Haines was” after passing her on the road.

It would appear that the driver of the vehicle that inflicted the damage to Helen Haines did a U-turn in order to get back to where Helen Haines was after passing where she was getting things from the boot or putting things into the boot of her car.

So it’s clear that there was a deliberate act here, this wasn’t an accident – someone, you know, just getting off the road here.

Dylan Young’s sound recalls the Beach Boys and the Beatles, both contemporary and timeless – and his latest album, Massive Shoe, is attracting international acclaim

It’s been a huge couple of years for Way Dynamic, the Melbourne multi-instrumentalist whose real name is Dylan Young. His 2025 album Massive Shoe is about to be re-released internationally after Young signed with the indie giant Jagjaguwar. The likes of Elton John, Djo, Zane Lowe and Elijah Wood have sung his praises. Last year he opened for Black Country New Road, Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman on their Australian tours. With a warm analogue crackle and subtle yet lush layers, gentle vocals and pensive lyricism, Way Dynamic’s thoughtful, sunny folk is both contemporary and timeless. It is not hard to understand his success.

The 30-year-old has been on the road for much of the last year, with Way Dynamic playing their first headline shows in the US and Europe, many of which sold out. When we meet at a cafe in inner-north Melbourne on a midweek morning, Young is briefly back in town before jetting off again for another European run, including summer festivals.

A job that changed me: Working the pool kiosk in the summer of ’82, I was excited when older boys came by – but I learned that respect is better than attention

14. September 2026 um 16:00

My job made me the envy of the cool girls; it made me visible. Then Johnno, Stevo and Whack paid a visit

In the summer of 1982, at the age of 14, I was hired to work in the ticket office and kiosk at the Sale Memorial Pool in Victoria’s Gippsland region. The cool girls at school, who did not usually acknowledge me, were seething with jealousy. It was a sought-after job in a time before fast-food outlets and chain supermarkets.

I was anxious because I didn’t look like the girls who usually worked at the pool. The Dolly magazine cover-girl types. They were tanned, used raspberry lip gloss and Impulse body spray, and wore stretchy boob tubes over their crocheted bikini tops.
